This Privacy Policy explains how Calxo (“Calxo”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use the Calxo mobile app. Calxo is a personal calorie and nutrition tracker that helps you log meals, set goals, and understand your progress. By using Calxo, you agree to this Policy.
Information we collect
- Account information. When you first open Calxo we automatically create an anonymous account so your data can be saved and synced — no email or sign-up is required to start. You may optionally add an email address and password later to secure and recover your account.
- Profile and health information. To calculate your goals we store details you enter, such as your name (optional), sex, date of birth or age, height, weight, body measurements, activity level, dietary preferences, and your weight, calorie, and macro goals.
- Food, activity, and wellness data. We store the meals and foods you log (including calories and macros), meal photos, water intake, fasting sessions, exercise, weight history, streaks, achievements, notes, and messages you send to the AI coach.
- Meal photos. If you scan a meal or add a meal picture, the image is used to estimate nutrition and may be stored with your log (see “Meal photos” below).
- Usage and diagnostics. We collect limited in-app usage events and error/crash information to keep the app working reliably. We do not use this to build advertising profiles.
- Device permissions. With your permission, Calxo uses your camera (to scan meals), photo library (to add meal pictures), microphone (to log meals by voice), and notifications (to send reminders you choose). You can change or revoke these in your device settings at any time.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- calculate your calorie and macro targets and adapt them to your progress;
- analyze the foods you log and generate coaching replies and meal plans;
- track your history, streaks, and insights;
- send the local reminders you enable;
- keep your data backed up and in sync across sessions; and
- fix bugs and improve the app using limited diagnostic data.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Anonymous accounts
Calxo is designed to work without you creating a traditional account. On first launch we generate an anonymous identifier that lets us store and sync your data privately to your device’s session. If you want to secure your progress or move to a new device, you can optionally add an email and password. Adding an email is entirely your choice.
Meal photos
When you take or attach a meal photo, the image is sent to our AI provider to estimate nutrition and may be stored with the corresponding food log on our cloud storage so it appears in your diary. You can remove a logged entry (and its photo) at any time, and deleting your account removes your stored photos. Please avoid capturing other people or sensitive documents in meal photos.
AI processing (OpenAI)
Several Calxo features are powered by AI. When you use them, the relevant content is sent to our AI provider, OpenAI, to generate a result:
- Scan or describe a meal: the food photo or your text description is sent to OpenAI to estimate the dish and its nutrition.
- Voice logging: your recorded audio is sent to OpenAI to transcribe it into text.
- AI coach: your chat messages, together with relevant context derived from your profile and recent logs (such as your goals, targets, recent foods, and weight trend), are sent to OpenAI to generate a reply.
- Meal plans: your calorie/macro targets and any preferences you provide are sent to OpenAI to generate a plan.
AI results are estimates and may not be exact. The AI provider processes this content to return a result to you. Please don’t include sensitive personal information in free-text descriptions or coach messages that you wouldn’t want processed for this purpose.
Food and recipe data (Open Food Facts, USDA, Spoonacular)
When you search for a food or scan a barcode, your search term or barcode is sent to third-party food databases — Open Food Facts and the USDA FoodData Central database — to return nutrition results. When you search for recipes, your search term is sent to Spoonacular to return recipe results. These lookups do not require your personal profile; only the query you enter is sent. Results may be cached on our servers to speed up future searches.
How your information is shared
We share information only with the service providers that help us run Calxo, under agreements that limit their use of your data:
- Supabase — our cloud database, authentication, and storage provider, which hosts your account data and meal photos.
- OpenAI — our AI provider, used to analyze food, transcribe voice, generate meal plans, and power the coach.
- Open Food Facts, USDA FoodData Central, and Spoonacular — food and recipe databases used to answer your searches.
- RevenueCat together with the Apple App Store or Google Play — to process and manage subscriptions.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service. We do not sell your personal information or share it for advertising.
Subscriptions and payments
Calxo offers an optional paid subscription that unlocks the AI features, with a 3-day free trial followed by a recurring plan (Monthly or Yearly). Subscriptions are handled through RevenueCat and the Apple App Store or Google Play. Your actual payment details (card numbers, etc.) are handled by the app store and are never seen or stored by us. RevenueCat receives limited purchase and subscription-status information so we can unlock premium features on your account. See our Terms of Service for billing details.
Notifications
Reminders (such as meal, water, streak, and weekly-recap nudges) are local notifications scheduled on your device. We do not run a push-notification server, and reminder scheduling stays on your phone. You can turn reminders on or off in the app and in your device settings.
Analytics and error logs
We record limited product-usage events and caught errors/crashes in our own cloud database to understand how the app is used and to fix problems. This first-party diagnostic data is not sold, is not used for advertising, and is not shared with third-party advertising or analytics networks.
Data storage and security
Your data is stored on managed cloud infrastructure (Supabase) and is protected by access controls so that each account can only access its own data. Meal photos are stored so they can be displayed back to you in your diary. While we take reasonable measures to protect your information, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account exists so the app can function for you. You can permanently delete your account and its associated data at any time from within the app (Settings → Account). Deleting your account erases your profile, logs, photos, coach messages, and other associated records from our systems, and removes your authentication account. Cached, non-personal food/recipe lookups and aggregate, de-identified diagnostic records may be retained. If you can no longer access the app, you can also request account and data deletion on the web.
Children’s privacy and age
Calxo is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Not medical advice
Calxo is a tracking and informational tool. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical, nutritional, or professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Calorie, macro, and other figures are estimates. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making changes to your diet, exercise, fasting, or health routine — especially if you are pregnant or nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition or history of disordered eating.
International users
Calxo is operated using cloud services that may store and process data in countries other than your own. By using Calxo you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in those countries.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Calxo lets you access and delete your data directly in the app. To make any other request, contact us at the email below. We do not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we make material changes we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continuing to use Calxo after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
